The Blue Smoke Cost Him Big Time

Released on: October 15, 2008, 9:37 pm

Press Release Author: lynthomas

Industry: Entertainment

Press Release Summary: You can't wake up earlier enough to successfully con the
insurance company with blue smoke.

Press Release Body: When a North Carolina man bought a box of rare and very
expensive cigars, and insured them against fire, everything seemed perfectly normal.
However, unbeknown to the insurance company, the man proceeded to partake of the
delights of his purchase. In just a few weeks he smoked his way through the entire
box of cigars.

Somehow the insurance company was unaware that the man did not pay the first premium
on the insurance policy.

"Sadly my rare cigars have been lost through a series of small fires", was the man's
statement as he filed a claim with the insurance company. A claim which the company
declined to pay. The man promptly pursued the matter and took the insurance company
to court.

"The claim is frivolous", the judge said in his summation. However, the court was
forced to acknowledge that the man was holding a policy from the insurance company,
showing the cigars as being insurable property and covered against fire. The judge
went on to point out that the insurance company had failed to specify on the policy
what form of fire was unacceptable.

The insurance company were forced to accept the ruling of the judge and opted to not
go through the costly process of an appeal against the court's decision. The man was
awarded $15,000 for the rare cigars which had been lost through fire.

Immediately upon the cheque being presented at the bank, the insurance company
ordered the arrest of the man. They had him charged on twenty-four counts of arson.
The company used the man's own testimony from the previous court-case in order to
convict him of having deliberately burned insured property. The man was sentenced
for a total of twenty-four months in jail, besides being made to pay a $24,000 fine.
