However, the damage had already been done. Soon after the release of Vioxx, studies indicated that the use of the drug could lead to an elevated risk of cardiovascular problems. The FDA speculates that during the five years Vioxx was on the market, there may have been between 88,000 – 139,000 heart attacks of which 30-40% were fatal. Vioxx causes heart attacks because it affects chemicals in inflamed tissues similar to what the kidneys use to regulate blood.
